Malaysia may be well known for many things, but films and superheroes aren’t among them. This could well change as of next year, however, after the $10 million investment by Dubai-based production company Spacepower in the Asian country’s first sci-fi movie.

The film, to be called “Mantera will be an Arabic, Russian and Malaysian co-production. Much of the CGI has been produced at the Spacetoon Malaysia studios.

Spacepower, which is part of Global New Age Media, has already secured a number of distribution agreements for the upcoming film.

“Mantera”, is due for release in the first half of 2012 across Malaysia, Russia and the Arab world, along with limited cinemas in the USA. The film will tell the story of a brave young man who saves Mantera (Man Transformable Exo-Robotic Armour) from falling into the hands of the dark legions of the Apocalypse.

“The film concept combines the ideas of “Iron Man” and the “Transformers” movies,” says Global New Age Media’s chairman Fayez Weiss al-Sabbagh. “I believe that being able to shoot the film in different places, including Moscow, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur, will give it a powerful push when it comes to distribution in Europe, Latin America and Asia.”

The Malaysian government has been investing in TV and film production in recent years. Around 40 Malaysian companies took part in this year’s MIPTV, the annual event in Cannes for the TV, film and digital media industries. Malaysian companies also managed to secure deals worth $70 million at MIPCOM 2011.
